By the grandson, and in the style of Candelario Medrano, this wonderful folk art sculpture is signed JJRM (Jose Juan Ramos Medrano) on the base, and comes from Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco, Mexico. With the exception of the initials, it would be easy to assume that this piece is by Candelario, as it retains the form, style, and coloration for which he is known; his relatives continued his unique images, but later works lack the dimension and detail. Measuring 12" high and 10" deep, this Nagual is both dramatic and enchanting, with humanoid features and great detail over the entire sculpture. The base has been cracked and reglued, and one ear has also been broken and reglued, with some losses. This fine creature was purchased in Mexico in the late 1970's, along with other items by Candelario.
