|This Nagual, in the shape of a Bull, was purchased in Mexico in the 1970's, and is attributed to Candelario Medrano, but is also very similar to works by the Ortega family of that same time. It measures just under 9" high, is 12" long, and approximately 6" wide. In bright colors, with the typical "barro butus"(birch oil) finish that gives a shine similar to varnish, the Nagual depicts a creature with kitchen implements attached, and a bearded, rather grotesque human face. In good condition, with the exception of a section of the red plate attached to the right side missing, it has no other losses or breaks. Such large and early works are uncommon, and are highly collectible, with examples in folk art and ethnographic museums in both Mexico and the US.|
