Measuring 10 7/8", this well sculpted male Ibeji figure is from the Yoruba people, located in Nigeria. With an elaborate headdress, the figure has two strands of trade beads around the neck, and one around the wrist. There is a nice amount of encrustation on the figure, with a beautiful rich glossy finish in other areas. With the exception of part of the left ear, the figure is intact, has a few old worm holes in the back of the head, and is fairly light in weight. Very simple and elegant form, the figure has scarification on the face and stomach, and is a wonderful example of the beauty of African sculpture. It dates to the early 20th century and comes from a private collection, acquired before the 1950's.
