Fanciful Merman Feast OCOMICHO Mexico Artist Signed
A wonderful ceramic diorama of a feast attended by thirteen Mermen, signed by the artist, Juana Candelario Rafael. Each figure has hands clasped, and appears to be holding a guitar or stringed instrument, has long flowing hair and is adorned with necklace and ear decorations, similar to those seen on pre-Columbian figures. Large in scope, the piece measures 16" wide, 14 1/2" high, and is 9" deep. Good condition with the following: two tails reglued in back, one tail top missing on front right figure, small tip of tail on left hand figure missing, and table has been reglued underneath. The table contains a feast of fish, bananas, bread, and other items, all colored in subtle shades. The body is brown, with cream, orange, red, yellow, and blue glazed details. Delightful and fanciful, this sculpture is a fine example of the folk art treasures that ceramic artists of Mexico have created for centuries.
