Large Unusual Japanese Champleve Persian Style Vase
Of most unusual form, this Japanese Champleve Vase is decorated with foliate and animal designs in the Islamic or Persian tradition. The flowers and color are in typical Iznik style, with stylized antelope or deer, and the unique lobed handles are similar to early Islamic design. The foliate tulips, arabesque designs, and animal forms are rather typical of the rich designs found in all Persian and Islamic art forms. The champleve is deep and finely executed, upon a background of geometric motifs that are typical of Asian design, but are also seen in middle eastern regions. Large and heavy, it measures 12" high, and approximately 9" wide. The base is 4 1/2" across, has a Japanese mark in a cartouche, and is lightly stamped "made in Japan" (the latter stamp may have been done separately from the original stamp) In good condition, with some minor loss of enamel, and a very slight indentation along the banding of ovals in the bottom half of the vase (hard to see, must search for it). This is a very dramatic and beautiful piece of Japanese enamel and metalwork, likely made for the Persian/Ottoman/Islamic market.
