This edition of George Stubbs' famous book, The Anatomy of the Horse, originally published in 1766, is a fine volume, with excellent images and quality. It was published by Gibbings and Company, Limited,in London in 1899, from the original copper plates of the 18 images. The book is large, measuring 17 3/8" by 11 1/2" and has 147+ pages. The paper is quite heavy, the Plates of horse anatomy are fine and clear, the binding is red cloth with green-gray spine and gold lettering. This is a rare edition, with few ever available on the market. The original book, when offered for sale, generally brings in excess of $20,000.
This volume has damage to the green cloth binding of the spine, some weakening of the spine at the top,and wear and abrasions to the red cloth binding. The interior has some slight toning, a name inscribed on the inner cover, and a small stain on the last two blank pages. The interior paper on the back cover has torn, but all pieces are still attached. There is a small paper label inside the front cover, with the information, "Chas. E. Lauriat Co., Importers & Booksellers, opp. "Old South" - Boston" Provenance: from the descendants of Harriet Beecher Stowe, once owned by Eliot Tuckerman, 1905, well known attorney and Harvard Law School alum.
