Of a highly unusual form, this double bronze inkwell is cast in the shape of a hedgehog, with a hinged top covering two copper inkwells. A good size, it measures 9" long, approximately 4 1/2" high, 4 1/4" wide and has two small holes in the bottom of the body. It is unmarked, though likely English, and dates to the 19th century, when writing accessories were often elaborate, frequently depicting figural and animalier forms. In heavy bronze, with a nice dark patina, it is lighter along the back and sides where it has been handled. With nice detail, the hedgehog looks slightly to the left, and the face is particularly well modeled. From the nub of the tail to the tip of its snout, this hedgehog is charming and well crafted, a fanciful inkwell, and a fine sculpture.
