| Of good size, this pre-columbian Nayarit figure measures 12" high, 7 1/4" wide, and 6" deep. The seated figure has hands on extended and shortened legs, and shows the ritual cicatrice tattoos on the shoulders, as well as ear spools. In very fine condition, there is a small loss on the rear hair piece, but no other damage other than some rubbing to the surface. The waist is cinched, and decorated with black vertical lines, and the surface shows remnants of clay in which it was buried, as well as a fair amount of manganese bloom. Where the clay is rubbed away, the surface is deeply colored in red-terracotta hues. From a private collection purchased before 1960, it is a fine example of Nayarit sculpture, from the classic era between 100BC and 200AD. | ||
