|Of cinnabar color cut velvet on gold thread background, this striking pair of Chinese chair covers date to the 18th century and features a rich design of Foo dogs, a large four toed dragon, lotus blossoms, and various other Buddhist and foliate designs. Each panel measures 70" by 21" and is backed with hand woven linen. One panel has two original ties for fastening, and has several chop marks, but are these are not very clear. Both panels have some old repairs, done in both deep red and gold thread, and one panel is slightly faded at the bottom, as is visible in the photo of the two together. Additional photos are available to see more detail and areas of small repairs. The velvet is all intact, and has a wonderful sheen, and the color varies according to the light and direction. They are not mounted, but could easily be framed or placed on a stretcher for display. This is a beautiful pair, and a wonderful example of the finest of Chinese textile arts.|
