BRUNO LUCCHESI Bronze Bas Relief - After the Bath
With a gilded surface, this lovely bronze bas relief depicts a nude woman, holding her baby on her knee, her foot resting upon the edge of a bathtub. Bruno Lucchesi sculpted many images of mother and child, in both bas relief and full sculptural form, and his works always display sensitivity, sensuality, and detail demonstrating the influence of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, which he experienced at a young age in Italy. The plaque measures 5 5/8" x 2 7/8", stands with a permanent bar support at the back, and is signed in the lower right corner. Though the motif of mother and child is present throughout his years of sculpting, this one has similarities to many created in the 1960's and 1970's. Bruno Lucchesi is a well known figural and genre sculptor, and his works have been exhibited in important collections throughout the world. He moved to New York in 1958 and has created a body of work that encompasses a wide range of sculpture, from intimate genre works to dramatic scenes exploring our modern world. His works are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hirshhorn Gallery, The Whitney Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Smithsonian. This is an especially endearing work, a wonderful depiction of the special affection of a mother for her child.
