Fine Watercolor Illustration PETER RABBIT Harrison Cady

Of large size, this watercolor is an exceptionally nice example of the work of Harrison Cady (American 1877-1970), a well known American artist and illustrator who portrayed the beloved character of Peter Rabbit in books and cartoons. His collaboration with Thornton Burgess, the author of "Bedtime Stories" lasted from 1911-1960 and leaves a legacy of classic children's stories featuring Peter Rabbit and friends, including Reddy the Fox, Jimmy Skunk, Buster Bear, Old Mr. Toad, Paddy the Beaver, and many others. In addition, Cady created a Peter Rabbit cartoon strip beginning in 1920, wrote and illustrated children's books on his own, including Caleb Cottontail and Animal Alphabet. He was also know for his landscapes, many in the South, and was a skilled etcher. As an illustrator of children's books, his images quickly became well known, and are still considered some of the finest of classic children's literature. This image is large and complex, with multiple figures and rich, colorful detail; a dozen well dressed forest creatures watch as a young boy approaches a small cabin, under a blue sky, on a bright Summer day. The painting is signed, undated, and there is no attribution as to it's source, but is likely one of the books by Burgess. It measures roughly 14 1/2" b 17 1/2", sight size, and is framed in archival materials in a modern wood frame. In excellent condition, with no stains, fading, or faults of any kind, this image is one of his finer and more elaborate works. Note: some slight reflection in photos from glass.
