Executed in vivid polychrome enamels, this copper tray is a fine example of the enamel work done in what is now Syria, utilizing the firing method of cuerda seca, in which a heavy string is used to separate the enamels, and burns away during firing, leaving the enamel work in high relief. On copper, with a tin coating on the back, it measures 11 7/8" in diameter, and is in good condition, with two small areas of slight enamel loss, visible in close up photos (loss apparently due to small dents, more visible on back). Decorated in lovely colors, the tray exhibits classic Persian motifs of arabesques and floral/foliate elements.
