This embroidered wool shawl is of very high quality, with very fine and precise embroidery and beautiful vivid color. It dates to the early or mid 19th century, measuring approximately 71" square, and is backed with later red fabric. Comprised of numerous sections that are hand embroidered, it is trimmed with an additional embroidered edge, and has a black center of woven cloth. The condition is good, with some losses to the outer edge, and holes in the black center that have been sewn, and a few separations between the embroidered sections (no tears). From the Kashmir area of India, these shawls were copied in the late nineteenth century, manufactured in France, England, and Scotland, and became a favorite accessory in the home, and were also worn. Lush and vibrant, this shawl is a classic design, with a rich palette of color and exquisite detail.
