An original black and white print of Chief, who was the last living member of the Calvary, and lived out his last years at Ft. Riley Kansas. Foaled in 1932, Chief was purchased for the Calvary in 1940 and retired in 1958. He died in 1968, and was given fully military honors at his funeral, and a large bronze sculpture by Fredric Remington stands over his grave. This photo measures 9 1/2" x 7 5/8", is mounted on a paper backing, and then mounted on a tan mat (15" x 10 3/4"), with the information written in pencil below the photo. The tan mat is torn and bent, but could be trimmed an re-matted. The photo has some surface scratches and slightly rubbed areas, and one spot on Chief's face where a liquid must have spilled (it hardly affects the image). This appears to be an image taken by a visitor, and is not one of those that seem to be official photos of Chief. A nice historic image for the collector of militaria, famous horses, or calvary memorabilia.
