Here is a splendid locket depicting some sort of critter: zephyr? Lion? Some other mythological beast? He has a diamond in his mouth, and his eyes are red stones. Measuring 1-1/8”, weighing 9.5g, and marked 10k, he is set up inside for 2 photographs with both celluloid and photo rings. He's a somewhat rosy gold. He also sports the maker’s mark for Kroll. So much symbolism in this pretty jewel! It depicts a crescent moon – symbol of the female principal, intuition and new beginnings; an arrow – symbol of swiftness (think: Katniss Everdeen, “Arrow”), Sagittarius, and sexual attraction (Cupid’s bow); and a 5-pointed star, symbolic of so many things we won’t even start! It is set with 11 turquoises (birthstone for December, believed to be good for healing and focus) and one seed pearl. The rose gold tests as 14kt...

This gorgeous necklace features 13 Madeira citrines (birthstone for November; they are said to bring joy and optimism into one’s life) – 3 clusters of 3 each, and 4 set singly. The central cluster has a pearl dangle. The rose gold is marked 9ct on the clasp, but it tests as a weak 10k. No other marks. Wearable length is 18-3/4”. Excellent condition. The clasp is a little fussy, but could easily be replaced. Circa 1910 or earlier...

This is a classic Victorian pin/necklace in a pinwheel design, with 9 lovely bright dark purple garnet and glass doublets (standing in for amethysts, probably at a time when real amethysts were quite rare and expensive), and lots of seed pearls. It has both a pin stem assembly for use as a brooch, and a jump ring for a chain. Hallmarked 10k on the clasp...

According to some, this is St. Catherine, patroness of young maidens and female scholars. There is a (“Catherine”?) wheel in the background (it could also be a spinning wheel or a ship's wheel), and a flower in the foreground. Her clothing looks very Renaissance to us. Marked “SILVER” on the C-clasp, with an illegible maker’s mark, the metal tests as sterling, and she’s a dainty 7/8” in diameter. 2.5g. In excellent condition, and circa 1850...

Here is a Victorian pin with the cross, anchor, and heart, the symbols for faith, hope and charity. It has really nice detail work in the metal. Unmarked, but it seems to be made of a layer of gold on top of a layer of copper (we’re sure about the gold). The center of the heart is set with a (faux?) seed pearl, and the cross is set with 11 tiny turquoise-colored cabs – they are too tiny for a definite ID. It measures 1-3/16 x 7/8"...

This dramatic brooch features two round black onyxes. Onyx has been used to defend against negativity – crucial in today’s world! Unmarked, but tests as 14 or 15 karat gold. It is centered by a baroque or freshwater pearl, and has two draping chains to highlight a central dogs-tooth pearl dangle. Further decorated by swirls and ropes of gold. It measures 1-11/16” x 1-1/4”, and the chains and dangle add another inch, making it 2-1/4” long in total. It is in excellent condition...

This Edwardian/Art Nouveau necklace would be perfect as a Valentine’s Day gift, for bride … or anyone else, really. Both the size and the pearl and diamond dangle make it unusual. It measures 1-1/4” at the widest point, and from the top-most diamond to the bottom of the dropper it is 2-1/4”...

Here is a pretty gypsy ring, made from a rich yellow 18kt gold. The center stone is a diamond, the 2 outer stones are rubies. It has decorative scroll work carving on the shoulders. The hallmarks are for Chester, 1903, and there is a maker’s mark that we can’t decipher. It weighs 4.0g, and is approximately size 5. The shank is a little off round, and it may have been sized at some time, but it is in excellent condition. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. T...

This sweet lady is made of unmarked but tested 18k yellow gold. Spangled with 8 tiny diamonds (the birthstone for April), and with her hair swept up into a bun with whispy tendrils of hair around her ears, she is just charming! She measures 1” x 1”, and weighs 2.5g. The gold is a little worn at the high points, and we had the jump ring repaired, as it was worn very thin – someone clearly loved it a lot! On the back, it looks as though someone made a groove for testing the gold. Otherwise i...

Here is a really lovely sash buckle, designed for Tiffany by the famous George Shiebler. It is marked “Tiffany & Co,” the winged S for Shiebler, “Sterling,” and “4758.” It is 3” x 2”, with a slight curve to it, and weighs 42.2g/1.49oz. Decorated with a floral motif, it’s a beauty. Geo. W. Shiebler & Co. were in business under that name from 1876 until almost 1915. It came in a Tiffany fabric bag, which may be original to the piece. In excellent condition. The photos are part o...

This pair of identical rich yellow gold pins would be an excellent addition to your collection of Victorian jewelry! 1-1/4” x 1/4”, they say “BEBE” on the front. They test as 9k, weigh 3.0 g, and the findings are signed “VID”. There are tiny flowers and floral designs at the edges. It looks like the findings are old replacements. One of them has 2 brownish stains on the back, otherwise in excellent condition. (Also note that the findings are basically safety pins, so if you're intere...

Plique a jour, that unusual, difficult, and beautiful enameling technique that gives a stained glass effect, dates from the 15th century. It was used by Cellini, then revived in the late 1800s in France. This plique a jour pendant is centered with an oval opal and accented with eight colorless brilliants and a fresh water pearl dropper. The translucent enamel is an unusual and lovely blue in color. The metal is 900 silver, suggesting that the piece is most likely German or Austrian in origin. Ci...

This delightful portrait in silver, of a wind-swept person in a cloak and hood, is very detailed and just lovely. We think it’s a boy (unusual!), as the hair seems to be quite short under the hood. The hood itself looks like a cap made from a flower, as seen on fairies in Victorian children’s books. It measures 1-1/8” wide, is hollow, and is marked “STERLING TOP GERMAN SILVER BACK”. German silver is a white metal. The back is a bit tarnished, has what looks like little bubbles of meta...

This beautiful pin is a crossover between the Art Nouveau and Victorian styles. The Victorians loved to use real insects, particularly these green beetles, in jewelry. The Nouveau jewelers loved naturalistic motifs, but generally didn’t use the insect itself – yet the design of the pin is totally Nouveau. Marked 14k, the pale gold setting contrasts nicely with the deep green of the beetle. The pin stem assembly is original. The clasp has a nice safety lever; it is bent a bit but still works ...
