This brooch is an interesting combination of Nouveau and Edwardian styles, and bears a remarkable similarity to a couple pieces by Whiteside & Blank that I’ve seen recently; however it isn’t signed. The pin consists of a framework enameled in palest green, in a formal Edwardian key pattern. In the middle is a sprig of leaves with a pearl berry with the stem twining around the framework in back. An interesting juxtaposition. There are 3 more pearls...

Here is a truly lovely garland necklace out of the Edwardian era, with an Art Nouveau design sensibility. It is pictured in Vivienne Becker’s “Art Nouveau Jewelry” on page 185. She describes it as having “festoons of gold chain in the Edwardian manner, set with peridots, and decorated with shaded satin enamel, c. 1900.” It is unmarked, but tests as 14k gold. It centers an oval peridot, has several small pearls, and an accent diamond; also a dropper ending with another oval peridot...

This extremely cool and highly collectable brooch depicts 5 turbaned “blackamoors.” Made from (unmarked, tested) 14k rose gold, and black and white enamel, the details are picked out in gold (their eyes, mouths, collars and turbans). There is a partial hallmark on the pin, and old repair to the pin stem assembly (invisible from the front), and some damage to the black enamel, especially the two outer figures’ noses and the chin of the rightmost figure...

This ring is one of our absolute favorites – and would make a great Valentine’s Day gift! The central diamond is approximately 20 points (1/5 of a carat, but looks bigger), set in platinum. The rest of the setting is made of unmarked but tested 14k gold of a lovely rich yellow. There are 4 tiny rubies and 3 tiny demantoid garnets. It’s very hard to ID the 4th green stone, due the size and setting, but it is mostly likely another demantoid. It’s a size 6, and weighs 2.1g...

This gorgeous brooch depicts a red poppy in full bloom, with leaves and buds. It was made by the well-known and very collectible Bippart Griscomb & Osborn of Newark, New Jersey. Their maker’s mark is on the back, as well as a 14k stamp. Measuring 1” x 1-1/4”, it has the long pin stem often found on antique pieces. It has a pearl mounted at the top, and another dangling below. The purchaser might want to clean up the gold on the back. Poppies have symbolized sleep, peace, and resurrection...

Here is a very sweet little pin signed by Hermann & Speck, well-known jewelers of Pforzheim, Germany. It is centered by a blue sapphire, and there is a pearl dangle. It is marked 333 for 8k gold (we hadn’t seen that before!), but when we tested it, it held for 10k. It is also marked “Depose,” which translates roughly as “patent.” It measures 1-7/16” x 1" including the pearl dangle, and weighs 2.5g/.08oz. In excellent condition, and circa 1900...

This gorgeous stickpin depicts a lovely woman in profile with a pearl nestled in her curls. Marked 14k, it’s made from yellow gold, and signed by the maker. It measures 2-3/8”, and weighs 2.0g or .07 oz. The pin is slightly bent, and the back is dented a little, but this doesn’t detract from the beauty of this enchanting jewel. Historical note: Mr. Blank of Whiteside & Blank was a Titanic survivor! Circa 1900...

In the shape of an arrow head, this wonderful stickpin features a sparkly cognac-colored diamond of approximately 10 points. Above and below the diamond are 2 lovely (cultured?) golden pearls. It weighs a satisfying 2.3g of unmarked but tested 14k yellow gold, which has been hammered to enhance the “arrow head” look. It measures ½” x 7/16” x 2-1/2" long. In excellent condition...

Here is a really lovely, easy-to-wear ring that could have been worn by Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, or any of the stylish ladies of Downton Abbey. A cabochon of green chalcedony (thought by Native Americans to promote harmony and good will), reminiscent of high quality jade, is surrounded by red and green enamel on the setting. The shank has Celtic interlace decoration (also called entrelac), highlighted with more red and green enamel. It is just slightly smaller than size 6, and the top...

Here is a lovely pair of white gold-fronted double cuff links. Each end is marked WHITE GOLD FRONT BELAIS 14K; TALON GRIP TRADEMARK, and is octagonal, measuring 5/8 x 7/16”, with rigid connectors, hinged at one end. Belais Brothers were amongst the first to develop a formula for white gold (their patent was for 1917). Many think they were the premier workers in white gold, and their jewels are highly collectible. These show some wear to the gold, with a bit of red metal (copper?) showing throu...

This lovely lady is made from 14k gold – there is a partial mark, so we tested it. She is framed by a stylized shell motif, and has flowers and a diamond in her upswept hair, as well as another diamond nestled in her décolletage. This watch pin or brooch is of hollow construction, and weighs 4.7g. It measures 1” x 1-1/4”. The pin stem assembly is original. Her face is a little worn in the high places, and the back has darkened in a couple places. Also on the back there is a scratch, and a...

Although this jewel is English, it reflects the aesthetics of fin de siècle Russia, with its pink topazes and demantoid garnets. The fairly large topazes are surrounded by swirls of seed-pearl-set gold, and set off by 4 bright green demantoid garnets, 2 of which are set into the fine chains which connect the top section to the bottom; of the other 2, the top one is a modified pear shape, the other oval. It measures 2” long by 1-1/8” across at the widest point, and weighs 5.4g. In overall ex...

This beautiful lavalier is made from 10k rose gold, with the two little swirls at the bottom being a subtle greenish gold. In a straight line down from the bale are a seed pearl, an opal with excellent color, and an oval amethyst. There are a further 6 tiny seed pearls. It is marked 10k on the bale, and measures 1” x 7/8" not including the bale. There is a slight color variation of the rose gold in the bottom left quadrant, but it doesn’t have any impact on the beauty of the piece. I've had ...

This simple yet elegant ring is made from unmarked 18k yellow gold and a purplish-pink topaz. Topaz is thought to be a healing and energizing stone, to bring forgiveness, and promote truth. Sweet! The ring is a size 8, and could be resized. The topaz is set in a modified buttercup setting, with a single leaf curling up to meet the stone on either side, and delicate detail work in the gold. It’s just possible that the stone is a replacement, but if so it was very well done, and the color is ju...

Here is a sweet little pin, measuring 7/8” across. It’s very autumnal, with leaves enameled in shades of green, yellow and orange, alternating with leaves set with 3 seed pearls each, and centering another seed pearl. The findings are original, with a neat security clasp. On the clasp is a maker’s mark consisting of an arrow with a circle at the end, probably for Robert Klitz, of New York. No hallmarks, but it tests for 14k gold. Circa 1900. Please read this description and look at the ph...
