Here is a very pretty and graceful brooch depicting a sprig of lily of the valley (which symbolizes “a return to happiness,” and is frequently used in wedding bouquets). It is marked 925, and tests for silver. Because of the way the stones are set, we can’t test them, but we’re pretty certain they are carnelians. 11 marcasites add sparkle to the whole. There is an illegible maker’s mark. It measures 1” x 5/8" and is in excellent condition. From the 1950’s or earlier, we believe...

Here is an unusual sterling silver and enamel pendant, which comes out of the Arts & Crafts movement, spearheaded by John Ruskin and William Morris, et al. The enamel colors are associated with the women’s suffrage movement in the UK: green (Give), white (Women the), and (Vote) violet – or at least, that’s the story! The free-standing wire work (so interesting!) interlaces around the body of the piece, and holds the oval of mother of pearl in place...

This wonderful bracelet is 7” long and 3/8” wide at the widest points, with 5 enameled panels which shade from dark green to pale green to magenta and back again. In between each panel is a round blister pearl. Each connecting link has a hard-to-read mark, probably a lion, also the marks for Birmingham, 1909. The maker’s mark is “S&E” for Schaverien & Eastmead. It has the original safety chain...

This eye-catching brush by Gorham Manufacturing Company is meant to look like the top of an old chest, with a strapping and stud motif. The top is monogrammed with a fancy "R". It has the Gorham marks, as well as “1857 C”, “Sterling,” and the scissors mark for 1907. It measures 6” x 1 -3/4" across the top, and is in very good condition. Here is a delightful plique a jour stylized moth, most likely German or Austrian in origin. The body has 4 colorless paste stones, and there is an emerald green paste stone in the tail. The plique shades from green to white to peach. 1-1/2” by ¾”, and stamped “800” on the back. It is in excellent antique condition and circa 1900. This sweet, heavily engraved pin is from the estate of Helen Aman, who escaped from the Bolshevik Revolution to (eventually) settle in California. It was one of her childhood jewels. It consists of a bell (with a clapper – but it doesn’t actually chime) dangling from an angled bar. Marked 84 for 875 silver, it also has a partial city mark, probably for Moscow. It measures 1-3/8” x 7/8", and is in excellent antique condition, with a nice patina...

According to some, this is St. Catherine, patroness of young maidens and female scholars. There is a (“Catherine”) wheel in the background, and a flower in the foreground. Her clothing looks very Renaissance to us. Marked “SILVER” on the C-clasp, with an illegible maker’s mark, the metal tests 90-100% silver, and she’s a dainty 7/8” in diameter. 2.5g. In excellent condition, and circa 1850...

The mix of metals makes this sash buckle quite unusual in my experience. The silver plate shows some wear - yellow metal shows through at some of the high points. We believe the gold to be about 9kt, and it’s also a plating or overlay. The buckle measures 3 x 2-1/2" and weighs in at 47.5 grams...

Here is a pretty sterling buckle with a floral motif. The plique is red, 2 different blues, and green. It is signed with a “JK” above another “JK” in a box. It has marks for London, 1886, and a duty mark. Measuring 3-1/8” x 2-1/4", it weighs 32.7g or 1.16 oz. It’s in quite good condition. The plique has a few hairlines and some bubbles, both of which are typical. The red and blue plique is dark, so it’s not very visible in the photo. The red plique appears to have some very fine th...

This lovely item is a navette-shaped pin or brooch from the Arts & Crafts era. It measures 2-1/4 x 3/8”. It has a leaf and berries design, centered by a blister pearl of an intriguing shape. It is marked STERLING, and the pin-stem assembly is original. We have not cleaned it, so it has a nice patina and a little bit of tarnish. In excellent condition, and circa 1900. Here is a pair of earrings which we had made over from a single cuff link, made c. 1920. Recycling/upcycling at its best! My jeweler came up with an ingenious way of creating these earrings – please see the photos. The backing of each (old) peacock glass setting is marked STERLING, and the (new) ear wires are sterling as well. Each cab measures 9/16” x 5/16", and the earrings hang a total of 1-1/2” each. The cufflink was an antique, so the glass shows some abrasion, but this is unnoticeabl...

This lovely navette-shaped pin from the Arts & Crafts era measures 2-1/8 x 7/16”. It has a leaf and berry design, centered by a pretty deep purple amethyst. Weird but wonderful, and SO Victorian! Here is a grooming chatelaine from sometime in the 1800s – very hard to put a more specific age to this. It has a Chinese fish motif at the top, and dangling from that are 3 implements, a tweezers, an ear-cleaning device, and a third implement for cleaning nails. (We just saw a similar chatelaine on eBay that was advertised as a device for opium users.) It tests positive for silver, but is unmarked and with a patina consistent with age. It is lacking a be...

Here is a sterling silver fancy-link chain, from the era of the Titanic (but possibly as late as the Art Deco period – Downton Abbey!), which is interesting enough to be worn on its own, or you can could hang a pendant or watch from it. The clasp is stamped “Sterling”. It measures 26”, and the links are ¼” or 4mm wide at the widest point. It weighs 5.6g or 0.19 oz, and is in excellent condition. This sweet lily pad necklace is a pleasure to wear! It drapes very nicely at base of the neck, measuring 15-1/2” long, with a maximum of ½” in width. It is marked "DANECRAFT STERLING RFG US PAT OFF" and weighs 36.8g or 1.29 oz. In excellent condition, and we believe it was made between 1940 - 1950. The flowers are sometimes mistaken for lotuses, which is no surprise – they are related. Please read this description and look at the photos very carefully, as we are not responsible for buye...

This striking necklace features a central (tested) silver panel with a big labradorite cab, ¾” x 9/16”. The whole panel with dangles measures 13/16” x 1-7/8”. The dangles are set with more labradorite cabs on chains. The wearable length is 24”, and there are 20” worth of labradorite beads, many having the distinctive blue flash for which that stone is known. The clasp has a very pretty flower and leaf design, and it’s stamped 925 on the back. The beads are on knotted string, and t...

This pendant is enameled in two shades of blue, with a pearl dangle. The front is composed of 3 panels of enamel. The outer ones are in the shape of sweet stylized hearts, in dark blue. The center is a lighter color, and the back is a lovely sky blue. Overall it is in very good condition, though the enamel on the back shows a small amount of wear on the high points. It measures 2” from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pearl. Unmarked. C. 1900. Comes with a 19-1/2” silver chain, not o...

This intriguing jewel has a saint, probably St. Peter, holding a key (to the church? To heaven?), and with a bird – a dove? - in the background) on one side, and a photograph of an ecclesiastical-looking person on the other. It contains a touched relic (a bit of ribbon which has been touched to the bone or something worn by a saint), a tiny base metal medal with Mary on one side, saying "Mary conceived without sin” and more Christian imagery on the other, and a wisp of cotton. Wouldn’t it ...
