The design of this piece is delightful and quite wild! It is primarily an Egyptian Revival piece, centering the Goddess Hathor (a goddess of music, dance, and fertility). She is wearing big earrings, and her usual headdress. She seems to have a flower in her hair, and in front of her there is greenery tied by a ribbon with a bow (we can’t tell if it’s laurel or mistletoe). The ink pots (no glass inserts) have winged hearts on them, and are surmounted by crescent moons – symbols from many c...

This brooch combines the styles of Art Nouveau and Edwardian jewelry, and is remarkably similar to a couple pieces by Whiteside & Blank that we’ve seen; however it is unsigned (not unusual for the time). The pin consists of a framework enameled in very pale green, in a formal Edwardian key pattern. In the middle is a sprig of leaves with a pearl berry; the stem twines around the framework in back, in a Nouveau fashion. There are 3 additional pearls set on the frame. It is marked (and tested at...

The gold is yellow, though in places it looks rosy. It measures 1-3/8 x 1/2” and weighs 3.2g. The hinge has an old repair, otherwise in very good antique condition, and circa 1900 (According to V. Becker, in 1901 or ’02 Haseler merged with Liberty & Co., and afte...

These lovely earrings have nice long dangles – the entire earring measures 1-3/4 long, and the dangle is 1-5/16”. They measure just under 1/2” at the widest point. The dangles have a charming bird and flower motif. They are black enamel and gold plate. I have been told that earrings like this pair were made during the Victorian era in Portugal and Spain, and that they are still being made in those countries today. These look old to me, but in excellent condition. The photos are part of t...

This lovely Art Nouveau lavaliere is unusual with its square lines at the top, making it both charmingly antique and very modern in appearance. It is made of 9 ct gold and is set with small pearls, amethysts [the smaller stones] and a large, central garnet/glass doublet. [Garnet/glass doublets were a common substitution in the Victorian age, when amethyst was one of the most valuable gemstones. Making them was often a family affair, done in the evenings around the kitchen table.] The pendant is...

This unusual sterling silver and enamel pendant comes out of the Arts & Crafts movement, spearheaded by John Ruskin and William Morris, et al. The enamel colors are associated with the women’s suffrage movement in the UK: green (Give), white (Women the), and (Vote) violet – or at least, that’s the story! The free-standing wire work (so interesting!) interlaces around the body of the piece, and holds an oval of mother-of-pearl in place. Also unusual is the use of brown enamel. There is a li...
