So much symbolism in this pretty jewel! It depicts a crescent moon – symbol of the female principal, intuition and new beginnings; an arrow – symbol of Sagittarius, swiftness (think of Katniss Everdeen), and sexual attraction (Cupid’s bow); and a 5-pointed star, symbolic of so many things I don’t even want to start! It is set with 11 turquoises (birthstone for December, believed to be good for healing, focus, etc.) and one seed pearl. It tests as 14k gold...

The design of this piece is delightful and absolutely mad! It is primarily an Egyptian Revival piece, centering the Goddess Hathor (a goddess of music, dance, foreign lands and fertility who helped women in childbirth [Wikipedia]). She is wearing big earrings, and her usual headdress. She seems to have a flower in her hair, and in front of her there is greenery tied by a ribbon with a bow (laurel? Mistletoe?)...

Weird but wonderful, and SO Victorian! Here is a grooming chatelaine from sometime in the 1800s – very hard to put a more specific age to this. It has a Chinese fish motif at the top, and dangling from that are 3 implements, a tweezers, an ear-cleaning device, and a third implement for cleaning nails. (We just saw a similar chatelaine on eBay that was advertised as a device for opium users.) It tests positive for silver, but is unmarked and with a patina consistent with age...

This gorgeous lavalier sports a light purple amethyst (reputedly good for clarity of mind), framed by rose gold panels which could be seen as Nouveau or Arts & Crafts. You decide. It has a pearl dangle with good luster which is interestingly off-round. Measuring 1-5/8” including the pearl but not the ring, by 7/8”. The amethyst measures 3/8” x ¼”. It is marked “9ct” but tests as 10k. It weighs 2.1g and is in excellent antique condition...

This beauty is made from unmarked but tested 18k yellow gold. The flower is enameled in black, and it has a tiny central old-cut diamond. There is a little chipping to the enamel, but it’s still quite lovely. The flower measures 1/2” x ¾” and the whole thing is 2-1/2” long. C 1900. This striking pin is composed of 2 beautifully engraved silver circles intertwined with an oval, and set with ovals of agate of various colors. Agates have been used in jewelry going back into antiquity. They were thought to ward against storms and headaches, attract strength, and to affect dreaming. Queen Victoria became enamored of Scotland during her reign, so everything Scottish became popular during that period (except, perhaps, haggis!), especially post 1848 when she bought Balmoral Castle...

According to some, this is St. Catherine, patroness of young maidens and female scholars. There is a (“Catherine”) wheel in the background, and a flower in the foreground. Her clothing looks very Renaissance to us. Marked “SILVER” on the C-clasp, with an illegible maker’s mark, the metal tests 90-100% silver, and she’s a dainty 7/8” in diameter. 2.5g. In excellent condition, and circa 1850...

Here is a Victorian book chain, 17” long, with two spring rings. Men: use it for your pocket watch, in true Victorian style! Ladies, you can do the same, or use it for a locket or charm or whatever you like! Each link, which looks like a little book – hence the name - has a pattern stamped or carved into it. Some links show some wear consistent with age...

Here is a nice micromosaic brooch, possibly from Italy – in the 1800s the Italians were making these pieces for the tourist trade. This one is made of red, blue, and white tesserae, and none of them are missing, which is unusual. The setting is brass, we believe, and the whole thing is 2-5/8” x 7/16". It is signed “FAP” on the back. It’s a bit dirty, and there seems to be a break in the twisted metal decoration around the edge, but it’s barely visible without magnification...

Here is a pretty 14k gold and enameled red flower, centered by a pearl, in an Art Nouveau framework. One leaf sports green enamel. It’s marked 14k on the clasp and has a plaque with the mark for Bippart, Griscom & Osborn. It measures a dainty 5/8 x 15/16", and weighs 2.6g. In excellent condition. Circa 1890. This is a classic Victorian pin/necklace in a pinwheel design, with 9 lovely bright dark purple garnet and glass doublets, and lots of seed pearls. It has both a pin stem assembly for use as a brooch, and a ring for a chain. Hallmarked 10k on the clasp. There is a small break in the gold framework, which doesn’t endanger the piece at all, and isn’t noticeable without magnification; otherwise in excellent condition. 1” in diameter. Circa 1880. Please read this description and look at the p...

Here is a brooch with an ancient Celtic design – two birds with enameled wings, bodies and eyes, with interlaced silver above and below. The enamel is in green, blue, white, and red. It is marked 925 for sterling silver, and has several other marks which are illegible. 1-1/2” X 1-1/4”. There are a couple places where the enamel isn’t perfect – please see photos. Probably a more recent casting of an older piece, and very pretty. Please read this description and look at the photos very...

Amethysts are traditionally though to aid in clarity of mind, putting the wearer in touch with their intuitions, and helping to cure headaches – and they are famous for aiding in sobriety! This large amethyst should be a great help, measuring 10mm across. It is set in a framework of leaves that bring to mind the Arts and Crafts era, with another on the bale, and a fringe of tiny seed pearls dangles below. It is marked and tested 14k gold and weighs 1.8g. I believe it was made during the 1960s,...

This lovely item is a navette-shaped pin from the Arts & Crafts era. It measures 2-1/4 x 3/8”. It has a leaf and berries design, centered by a blister pearl of an intriguing shape. It is marked STERLING, and the pin-stem assembly is original. I have not cleaned it, so it has a nice patina and a little bit of tarnish. In excellent condition, and circa 1900. Here is a very sweet little pin signed by Hermann & Speck, well-known jewelers of Pforzheim, Germany. It is centered by a blue sapphire, and there is a pearl dangle. It is marked 333 for 8k gold (we hadn’t seen that before!), but when we tested it, it held for 10k. It is also marked “Depose,” which translates roughly as “copyright” or “patent.” It measures 1-7/16” x 1" including the pearl dangle, and weighs 2.5g/.08oz. In excellent condition, and circa 1900. This brooch is an interesting combination of Nouveau and Edwardian styles, and bears a remarkable similarity to a couple pieces by Whiteside & Blank that I’ve seen recently; however it isn’t signed. The pin consists of a framework enameled in palest green, in a formal Edwardian key pattern. In the middle is a sprig of leaves with a pearl berry with the stem twining around the framework in back. An interesting juxtaposition. There are 3 more pearls. It is hallmarked (and tested at) 10k on the...
