| This little charmer consists of a line of 5 round and cushion cut sapphires alternating with 4 round and old mine cut diamonds down the center. 38 graduated rose cut diamonds surround the central stones. The setting is platinum-topped 18 carat gold, with an early safety clasp and a later-style round hinge. It measures 1-5/16” tip to tip, and 7/16” at the widest point. The sapphires’ facet junctions are abraded, otherwise it is in excellent condition. It started out in life as a ring, and is now a bar pin. The change was skillfully done; it’s very hard to see where the shank used to be attached. Unmarked, circa 1890. PROVENANCE: This comes from the estate of Virginia Hoke Newcomb. The Newcomb family is associated with a hotel chain in the Mid-West, the Sir Francis Drake in San Francisco and the Sainte Claire in San Jose, California. Virginia’s son William is famous in the mathematical world for having discovered “Newcomb’s Paradox.” | ||
