| I just can’t say enough about the gorgeousness of this ring! Composed of 3 opals in a straight line N to S, and 4 light blue (Montana?) sapphires in a square, all set in an oval of gold leaves and vines – just beautiful! The way the blues and greens of the luminous opals work with the blue of the sapphires is lovely. Unsigned, but marked “14k” on a plate under the stones. The opals are in very nice condition. The sapphires are not particularly good ones, and one has a crack, but because it is bezel set, it is stable; it is also unnoticeable without magnification. It is approximately size 6, and the oval decorated top measures 1 x 5/8”. Based on a conversation I had with a jewelry historian, I believe this to be circa 1930, possibly by one of the members of the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts. Traditionally, SAPPHIRE has been considered a defense against harm, it preserved the wearer from envy and brought divine favor. Kunz says that modern superstitions about OPALS being unlucky are based on a misinterpretation of a Scott story. In medieval times it was thought to cure eye diseases, and render its wearer invisible!! | ||
