| In perfect condition, this large medium weight linen sheet has a 20" scalloped turndown heavily embellished with Italian figural embroidery, lots of cutwork,and needlelace filling. Center medallion is graced by bow tied tendrils of lily of the valley blossoms, cascading into more flowers with large 2.5" and ornate embroidered T or J on one side and M on other side . The hems are lavishly embroidered scallops,highlighted by large padded lozenges("dots"),and interspersed with more Italian needlace depictions of the center bowed florals. This continues on to the corners,which is a duplication of rhe center medallion ,angled for the corners.This lavish work fills the 20" turndown.The bottom and one side of the sheet has drawnwork hemstitching. As in very old fine antique linen,the body of the sheet is made up of 3 pieces of matching linen joined by so rare, "antique seams",which were used to join linen for grand beds. OK, that's my favorite part! It's so humble, but still a work of art! This sheet was most likely a trouseau sheet for someone of means(Big Bed). It is mostly machine embroidered by hand with traces of handwork...undoubtedly professional.It is very sturdy and I doubt ever used, but most likely washed. I have not found any breaks or holes,just a few slight storage discolorations,and a trace of pale pinkish coloration...all should come out with proper laundering, and like all fine antique linen it will soften with age. A most delightful and desirable piece for the collector and to use and pass on for generations. It measures 86" X 118" will fit queen and possibly king, or even be used for a bed coverlet!
