Large Chinese late Qing dynasty lidded ginger jar decorated in underglaze blue with leafy vines and sweet pea flowers set against a white ground with a pale blue tint. The interior and base are glazed while the exterior mouth rim, foot rim and interior edge of the lid are unglazed. This type of decoration with a sweet pea floral background was produced for the Straits Chinese communities and is also referred to as blue and white nonya ware or "Shanghai ware" (see “Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector’s Guide” by Ho Wing Meng). 9 ½” high x about 9” diameter. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The decoration is somewhat irregularly applied in some areas. This vase is from the private collection of a former American diplomat to Guangzhou and Beijing from 1983-1987.
