Ltd. Ed. Japanese Woodblock Print Matsubara Naoko
$450

Oversized limited edition sosaku hanga Japanese woodblock print depicting Kenkun Shrine, also known as Takeisao Shrine, in Kyoto by Matsubara Naoko (b. 1937). The print is pencil-signed, titled “Kenkun Jinja,” numbered 19/50, and dated 1977 in the left side of the lower margin. The artist’s red seal is to the left of the edition number. The scene is printed entirely in black against a white ground and is executed on very thin paper. Paper size: 27”V x 34 ½”H (image: 19 ¼”V x 27”H). The print was never framed and is in very good overall condition. There is crinkling evident in the large margins of the paper. Matsubara’s prints are featured in a number of reference works including “Modern Japanese Prints: The 20th Century” published by the Carnegie Museum of Art (pages 108-114) and “Who’s Who in Modern Japanese Prints” by Frances Blakemore (pages 101-102). Her work can be found in the collections of museums worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum, Harvard University, and the Tokyo Museum of Fine Art. Matsubara was closely acquainted with and influenced by the work of Shiko Munakata. She currently resides in Canada. This print is from a Phoenix, Arizona estate.
