Chinese early Republic period porcelain bowl decorated in famille rose enamels against a turquoise ground with a magpie bird perched on a limb surrounded by wisteria, peony flowers, and scrolling vines. To the left of the bird is a red “Dayazhai” (Abode of Great Refinement) hallmark. To the left of this mark is a small red oval panel holding two dragons and the script “Tian di yi jia chun” (“Heaven and earth are united as one family in spring”). The base holds an overglaze rust-red four-character mark on a white ground reading “yong qing chang chun” (eternal prosperity and enduring spring). The interior is glazed white. The tip of the thin foot rim is unglazed and has a faintly visible trace of sand grit adhering. This pattern was initially commissioned by the Empress Dowager Cixi for her 60th birthday in 1894. 2 1/8” high x 4 3/4” diameter. Early 20th century. Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The mark on the base is rubbed and there is minor glaze flaking evident. From the private collection of a former American resident in Guangzhou and Beijing from 1983-1987.
