Vintage Japanese sumi-e scrolled painting on silk depicting a well detailed bearded Shoki, the demon queller, dressed in scholar's robes and hat and posed in a fierce stance with sword in hand prepared to ward off evil spirits. The figure is set against a dense calligraphic background. The painting is signed with two characters “Midori” (green) and “Kumo” (cloud), which is possibly a pseudonym, followed by a square red seal. Nice silk brocade mounting with wood scroll ends. Scroll: 66"V x 20"H (painting: 41 1/2"V x 15 5/8"H). 20th century (possibly dated in Chinese cycle years to 1978). Very good overall condition with one flaw to the left of Shoki's knee-high boot (see enlargement 7). The red seal is smeared. From the private collection of a former American expatriate to Asia in the 1980s.
