Japanese first edition "shin hanga" woodblock print titled "Nijo Castle, Kyoto, in Snow" from the series "Twelve Views of Kyoto" by Kenji Kawai (b. 1908). The date of "Showa 22, 12th month" (1947) appears in kanji at the lower left margin. The artist's signature and red seal appear in the lower left corner of the image. The Unsodo publisher's seal is in the upper right margin. The carver (Nagashima) and printer (Shinmi) seals are in the lower right margin. The paper measures about 15 3/4"V x 10 1/2"H (image size: 14 3/8"V x 9 1/2"H). Full margins. Very good overall condition. There is one brown piece of tape at the center top margin and a few vertical wrinkles in the paper. Nijo Castle was built to the west of Kyoto by the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1600 to serve as his residence when he was in the city. It was from Nijo Castle that the last Shogun handed over his resignation to the Emperor in 1867.
