Oversized hand-colored, limited edition etching of an abstract theme by Kenji Ushiku (1922-2012). The bottom margin contains in pencil a Japanese kanji title (which appears to translate "flower garden"), the number of the edition (8/50), and the artist's signature. This image is believed to date from the 1970s. The heavy stock paper measures 19 1/2"V x 12 1/2"H. The print is in very good overall condition. It is very slightly sunstruck. There are three small pieces of tape on the back edges. The margins have a few faint smudges which could be from production. Kenji Ushiku was educated in Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and was known for his etchings. Ushiku is listed on pages 224 & 225 of Frances Blakemore's "Who's Who in Modern Japanese Prints," Weatherhill Publishing, N.Y., 1975. A color illustration of Ushiku's work can also be found on plate 40 of "Modern Impressions: Japanese Prints from the Berman and Corazza Collections 1950-1980" by Frank Chance and Matthew Mizenko, 2005 exhibition catalogue. The artist's biography is on page 90.
