Oversized hand-colored, limited edition etching of an abstract theme by Kenji Ushiku (b. 1922). The bottom margin contains in pencil a Japanese kanji title (which appears to translate "flower garden"), the number of the edition (8/50), and the artist's signature. This image is believed to date from the 1970s. The heavy stock paper measures 19 1/2"V x 12 1/2"H. The print is in very good overall condition. There is a faint mat burn evident and there are three small pieces of tape on the back edges. The margins have faint smudges which could be from production. Kenji Ushiku was educated in Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and was known for his etchings. Ushiku is listed on pages 224 & 225 of Frances Blakemore's "Who's Who in Modern Japanese Prints," Weatherhill Publishing, N.Y., 1975. A color illustration of Ushiku's work can also be found on plate 40 of "Modern Impressions: Japanese Prints from the Berman and Corazza Collections 1950-1980" by Frank Chance and Matthew Mizenko, 2005 exhibition catalogue. The artist's biography is on page 90.
