Large heavily potted Japanese Meiji period Imari porcelain 9 7/8” diameter x 3 ½”H deep bowl. A central roundel contains the “three friends” (pine, prunus and bamboo) motif in underglaze blue with touches of rust-red and gilt highlights. The interior and exterior sides are decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels with gilt highlights in four alternating small and large vignettes featuring a sage meditating under a pine tree and ducks surrounded by flowering plants. The cartouches are set against a geometric and floral patterned background. The base has a thick double foot rim with concentric blue circles on both and a Nabeshima comb pattern around the exterior foot rim. The interior rim has some sand grit adhering. 19th century. Very good overall condition.
