Dish. China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), c.1740. Height 27 mm (1.06 inch), diameter 230 mm (9.06 inch), diameter of footring 122 mm (4.80 inch) German/Dutch botanist Maria Sybille Merian (1647-1717), described the insects of the West Indies, Surinam in particular. For the central decoration on this specific dish, no matching print of her has been found. The decoration of the central flowering stem makes that this dish can be categorised as a "Merian-style" dish. (Jörg & Van Campen 1997, p.287). Condition: A frit to the rim and some fits and chips to the footring
