| Mabel Lee Hankey (British, 1863 - 1943) Watercolour on ivoy. Portrait of Robert Gerard, 4th Baron Gerard (1918-1992), at the age of 6. He is wearing a green jacket with white collar and green buttons, his fair hair parted to the left side. Signed to obverse, "Mabel Hankey" and engraved to frame, "Robert Frederick William Alwyn Gerard/1924". Reverse, with lock of the child's blond hair. Oval, 8 cms. X 61/2 cms. (3 inches X 2 1/2 inches). This is a special and rare miniature. It is the first porrait that Piccolo Art has had in inventory by Hankey in over five years. The miniature painter Mabel Lee Hankey was born in Bath, England, the daughter of the professional artist Henry Eddington Hobson. She became the first wife of the painter William Lee Hankey, and exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Miniature Society, the Society of Women Artists and the Royal Academy. Robert Frederick William Alwyn Gerard was born in 1918. He died in 1992 and was the 4th and last Baron Gerard. Her sitters included Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later Queen Elizabeth, wife of HM King George VI), Lady Elphinstone, The Master of Lindsay, and The Hon.Margaret Lindsay, children of Lord Balcarres. She is considered to be among the first tier 20th century miniature artists. | ||||||||||
