|William Lewis (American, 1788 - c. 1838). Watercolour on ivory. Portrait of a gentleman wearing a dark coat. Oval, 7 cms. X 6 cms. (2 3/4 inches X 2 1/2 inches). The miniature is in very good condition; the ivory base has shrunk slightly. William Lewis was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1788. He worked in Salem as a portrait painter and miniaturist until 1821, then moved to Boston, where he practiced until 1838. During these years he made frequent visits to his hometown and in the early 1820s also painted in Rhode Island. Lewis exhibited still lifes, portraits and miniatures at the Boston Athenaeum in 1828 and 1831 and at the Boston Mechanics' Association in 1837. A number of his miniatures are owned by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem and the Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence. Lewis died in or after 1838.|
