| An historically important double portrait of the brothers, John Henry Garstin and E. C. Garstin. One of the boys is wearing a blue tartan Petersham coat with pink bow with white collar, and is holding a wooden hoop. The other child is wearing a brown Petersham coat with dark brown belt, pink bow and white collar, holding a brown cap with red and gray banding. Period embossed gilt brass frame, with inner slip engraved E. C. Garstin 1843 J. H. Garstin. Rectangular, 15 cms. X 12 ½ cms. (6 inches X 5 inches). John Henry Garstin, as an adult, was a member of the East India Company and was Governor of Madras in India from December 1, 1890 to January 23 1891. The artist Charles Foote Taylor flourished between 1818 and the 1850s. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1820 – 1853, and had a distinguished clientele within British society, particularly within the theatrical profession. Works by Foote Taylor are found in major collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the British Museum. | ||||||
