| Alfred Edward Chalon, c. 1835. Water color portrait of a lady, attributed to Alfred Edward Chalon. The lady is depicted wearing a black dress with puffed sleeves and lace trim, a white veil, her hair in ringlets, seated on a red upholstered chair in a woodland. Gilt metal frame. Oval, 10 cms. Diameter (4 inches). Alfred Edward Chalon was born in Geneva, on the 15th of February 1780, of French descent. He entered the Royal Academy Schools, London, on the 12th of August, 1797, at age 17, having been brought to England in 1789 by his father who became a professor at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Chalon exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1801 – 1860. His sitters included Queen Victoria, Princess Charlotte of Wales, the Duchess of Kent, and many other members of the royal family, as well as illuminaries of his time. Chalon was elected ARA in 1812, and RA in 1816. Chalon died in Kensington 3 October 1860. Examples of his work may be found at the V & A Museum, London, the British Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery, London, and in private collections including those of HM, Queen Elizabeth. | |||||||
