| Portrait of a young gentleman, painted by Charles Ford of Bath, (1801-1870), c. 1842. The ½ length portrait depicted a young gentleman seated on a red upholstered chair. He wears a black coat, waistcoat, white chemise, and tied black cravat. Signed on the reverse and dated, “C Ford pinxt/20 New Bond St/Bath/June 25th 1842. Gilt wood frame. Portrait, rectangular, 10 cms. X 8 cms. (4 inches X 3 inches). Frame, 24 cms. X 22 cms. (9 1/2 inches x 9 inches). Charles Ford of Bath was born in 1801. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, between 1830 and 1856. Ford was an associate of both Wordsworth and Hannah Moore, as well as reportedly being friends with Sir Thomas Lawrence. In his day, Ford was one of the principal miniaturists in Bath, his portraits being known for their expressiveness. Sitters of his day included the British aristocracy and politicians. Examples of his work may be found in the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, as well as the British Museum, London. | |||||||
