| Portrait of a military man attributed to John Ramage (1748-1802). The head-and-shoulders portrait depicts the gentleman in ¾ pose, wearing a powdered wig, a scarlet coat with silver epaulette, blue lapel, black stock, and white tied stock. Period brass frame, but not original to the portrait. Oval, 3 ½ cms. diameter (1 ¾ inches). Excellent condition. John Ramage was born in Ireland in 1748. Before leaving Ireland at an unknown date, he studied at the Dublin School of Artists in 1763. Before eventually settling in America, he lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia between 1772 - 1774. He was working as a miniaturist in Boston by 1774, but with the outbreak of the American Revolution he joined the loyalist troops and went with his regiment to Halifax in April 1776. The following year his regiment went to New York City, where he remained until 1794 and achieved considerable success as a miniaturist. In 1794 he left NYC for Montreal because of financial difficulties. | ||||||
