1930s St. George and the Dragon Brooch - Vermeil
This is a very old brooch depicting St. George and the Dragon in gold plated Sterling, with simulated pearls and a sparkling rhinestones. The top is a fancy metal bar about 1" wide with a stone in the middle that appears to be amethyst glass. The total length of the brooch is 3" and at the widest part it is 13/4" wide. St. George and his horse are decorated with clear rhinestones and the dragon has three red stones at the bottom. There are also simulated pearls that hang from the top bar and from the bottom of the figure. A couple of the bottom ones have small spots that appear to have been caused by rubbing against the metal rings that hold them. Other than that the pin is in excellent condition considering its age. Most people know the story of St. George who killed the dragon, and they also know that St. George is the patron aaint of England, and has appeared on coins from that country. Legend has it that English soldiers carried with them Thaliers (coins) depicting St. George with them into battle for protection. I'm not sure about the legends, but I do know that this pin is very old, in excellent condition, and marked Sterling, as shown.
