The statue can be identified as Amitayus by the vase of eternal life he is holding in his two hands. He is the Bodhisattva of eternal life, longevity, or the Buddha of the infinite. He is invoked for long life, health and happiness.

This is quite a large statue, measuring twelve inches in height and eight in width. Fully gilded, it was made in Nepal some thirty years ago and is an example of the fine work still coming out of the workshops of Patan in the Kathmandu valley.

A very traditional shoulder cloth, this is kind of rachu has been supplanted by more "modern" styles. The dimensions have changed little over the years from this one's measurements of 18.5 by 103 inches (including fringe). Condition is good for its age, with a pleasing luster from wear. Some of the fringes have been lost.

There are twenty cards in this set of tsakli, all the same size, shape, theme and with the same calligraphy on the reverse side. For presenting it on Trocadero we are dividing it into five groups of four cards each so that we can provide high resolution photographs of each card. To see the entire set go through this and the other four pages.

$25 is a very reasonable price for each card but if anyone wants to purchase the entire group of 20 cards the price will be discounted to $400...

Long hangings like this are found through the Himalayas in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and Buddhist parts of India. They are used in the shrine rooms of smaller Buddhist gompas (monasteries). As a result they are often called "gompa thangkas". When a new one is donated to the monastery the old one sometimes finds its was onto the market. We purchased this one in Kathmandu several years ago but the seller could not tell us where the gompa was housed or even in which country...

Because of the subject matter we can assume these two small panels were once part of a thorgam, a Tibetan cabinet used specifically for making offerings to wrathful gods. Each features a skull cup (Tibetan: kapala) being supported by three severed heads, and holding offerings. Inside the cabinet would have been placed more offerings.

They have been varnished before they were cleaned, so they would be a challenge to restore to their original condition...

This kind of wooden phurba is found mostly in the foot hills and higher mountains of Nepal's Himalayas. We have never seen one which could be convincingly assigned a Tibetan origin although often they are mislabeled as Tibetan.

Of all the hundreds of phurbas we have handled this one stands out as one of the most outstanding. It has a wonderful patina, the carving is expressive, and the cloth dangles lend it a personality of its own...

Woven like a pile carpet this piece was used by Tibetan horsemen to decorate the forehead of one of their horses.

The central decoration is a vase holding a norbu (flaming jewels). Around it are groups of jewels.

The piece is in good condition except that the edges would originally have been bound with cloth. Instead it has been carefully stitched along the edges to keep the pile from fraying.

This kind of small rectangular pile carpet could have been used in a monastery or a domestic meditation room, or it could even have been used as the seat part of a saddle set. A very similar one is shown as pl. 239 in Tibetan Rugs, White Orchid Books.

The carpet is in good condition, natural dyes, and no reweaving. It measures 26-1/2 by 24 inches (67 x 61 cm.)

Tibetan gau boxes come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but this is one of the most common form of the larger gaus. It was made to be either placed on an altar or worn on the person. The mountain villages of Nepal used to be full of wonderfully carved wooden items no matter how humdrum the function. These examples of a rich material culture are slowly vanishing as fashions change and the older generations die out. Villages are no longer so isolated and slick new imports replace what once had to be produced locally by hand.

This traditional wooden wrist guard is a good example. Not only did it server a the specific function of protecting an archer's forearm from...
