This is a very early piece, stylistically similar to sutra covers dating to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. We believe that this dates from the same period.
The base measures 9-1/2" (W) x 7"(Depth) x 4" height and with the back the piece is 16-1/2 high. The condition of the carving is good. The bottom of the base was split some considerable time ago and was reinforced with an additional thin piece of wood, making it sit a little irregularly. A very old (probably original) butterfly joint holds the two pieces together. Like many pieces coming out of Tibet recently, it has been given a coat of polyurethane. We have done no restoration and are selling the piece as is. Additional photos of the back and the bottom are available.
