Tibetan Miniature Painting, Tsakli, Wrathful Deity
Visit our web site, Himalayan Antiques, for a short discussion of tsakli and their place in Tibetan art.

It is often exceedingly difficult to identify the subject matter of tsakli, but here the monkey standing on its hands balancing a skull cup containing three torma with his feet identifies the deity as Kshetrapala, the "protector of the Fields". Kshetrapala is an emanation of Mahakala, who has the face of a lion and rides upon a horse, wielding a skull-cup and a spear-flag in his left and right hands.

The card measures 4-1/4 by 5-1/4 and is in sound condition with virutally no paint loss. The face of it has been very slightly glazed. The reverse has two lines of inscription in one of the lesser used Tibetan scripts. The two attached pieces of cloth will accomodate a wooden sliver so that the card can be held up without having to be touched.

These are direct scans of the front and the reverse of the card. We estimate it to be nineteenth century at the very latest.
