Tibetan Painted Wooden Gau Box
Used for displaying a small to medium sized statue, this gau box can also be considered a statue holder. The head of the statue should be visible through the window, either because the statue is of the appropriate size or with the aid of an internal stand with which to elevate the statue. The front panel slides up for easy access to the interior of the box.

The sides of the box are nicely dovetailed and the back is attached with wooden pegs. As is common with older pieces of Tibetan furniture, there are no nails.

The front of the box has been cleaned and revarnished but the paint is original. The sides are untouched.

The box is nine inches high, six inches wide, and four-and-a-half inches deep. The box is in good condition with the exception of a chip missing from the top on the right side. See photo number four. As to ago, I would estimate an easy one hundred fifty years.
