Painted Wooden Tibetan Losar Tray
Losar, the Tibetan New Years, is marked by several days of celebration and visiting monks, relatives, and friends as well as a like amount of entertaining guests. Every household is well prepared with food and snacks, some of which are piled high in a divided container shaped like this, specially used at the time of Losar.

This one is quite small and was probably used for more expensive snacks such as nuts and dried fruit. The container part is eight inches square. The handles add an extra four inches to the length. The tray is 7-1/2 inches tall at the top of the divider. Two sides are decorated with flaming jewels, while the decorations on the sides with the handles have been worn off from use or perhaps were never painted. The tray is in good condition aside from this paint loss.
