Archaic Bhutanese Textile: Kushung
Tunics like this were once worn by women in a small district of northern Bhutan but faded from use over a century ago. For more information about their unique place in Bhutanese textiles, see "From the Land of the Thunder Dragon", p. 106ff. In fact an illustration from a small section of a kushung adorns that book's cover. They are very hard to find and have become very collectable.

The kushung we are featuring here has the additional feature of felt applique and ribbon work around the collar.

In spite of many small flaws this kushung is in the best condition of any we have come across. There are many small holes but the overall appearance is still very presentable. The fringe is largely in tact and there is no brittleness to the fabric.

The kushung is fifty-one inches long including a 5-1/2 inch fringe. It is 33-1/2 inches wide.
