Wooden Tsampa Bowl from Bhutan
While Bhutan's culture is very similar to that of Tibet, they have evolved their own unique style. Take something as simple as a tsampa bowl. Elsewhere on Trocadero we have a typical Tibetan tsampa bowl. Here we have a very traditional Bhutanese one. There is no mistaking the two. The Bhutanese one has a much simpler shape and the emphasis is on the beautifully figured light colored burl wood. The Tibetans have a much more elaborate shape with a top smaller than the bottom but with an overhanging lid.

Carved out of a single piece of beautifully figured burl wood, the bowl is 3-3/4 inches high and 6-1/4 in diameter. The top fits snugly over the bottom. The bowl is in excellent condition with a very rich patina. It is very hard to date a traditional item like this and we are arbitrarily dating it to before 1950.
