While we were shopping in Kathmandu this past winter, business was so slow and
the political situation had become so unstable that many Tibetan merchants
were seriously considering leaving. Dealers we had done business with for years
were trying to convert their inventories into cash by offering very tempting
prices for whole collections of items. We had the chance to buy
a large collection of early Tibetan leather covered boxes. As a result we purchased thirty-four very
nice and all-original leather covered Tibetan boxes, which have only recently arrived
at our shop in Ipswich, MA.
The box we are showing here is among the plainest of these leather boxes. The style of the box and the hardware would indicate an age of at least two hundred years. The hardware is all original including the ring hinges and the decorative hasp and corner mounts and arrow-shaped brackets. The decorative panels on the front, top, and sides were once covered with fur which has been completely worn away but for a few traces on the top panel. Several of the other boxes from this collection still have fur covered panels. Inquiries on these other boxes are also welcome.
The size of this box is fairly typical of most of these boxes. It measures 27.5 x 12.5 x 15.5 inches. The box weighs 22 pounds. UPS ground shipping anywhere in the U.S. would be $40 or less. Had we purchased this box a few years ago we would have to pay considerably more for it than our present asking price.
