While we purchase almost all our Tibetan and Nepali items at the source in Asia, these Tibetan burl bowls were obtained locally. As a result we know less about them than most of our inventory. While they are certainly Tibetan we are unsure where they might have originated: Ladakh or Bhutan or historical Tibet. The metal appears to be silver over silver-plated copper. Both the coral and turquoise stones are real. The insides of the bowls are silver-lined. The burl is highly figured. Double dorjes have been incised on the silver plates on the bottoms. The silver on the lotus petals on the covers of the bowls has been almost worn off exposing the copper base. Between that wear and the wear on the bases we would assume that the bowls have good enough age to have placed them in the antique category. Aside from the above mentioned wear both are in quite good condition. One has come loose from its base but sits properly anyway, and the top of one has been dented down so that it is a bit shorter than the other. The bowls are approximately 8 inches in height and 5.5 inches in diameter. |
