Shaman's Phurba from Nepal decorated with tassels
This kind of wooden phurba is found mostly in the foot hills and higher mountains of Nepal's Himalayas. We have never seen one which could be convincingly assigned a Tibetan origin although often they are mislabeled as Tibetan.

Of all the hundreds of phurbas we have handled this one stands out as one of the most outstanding. It has a wonderful patina, the carving is expressive, and the cloth dangles lend it a personality of its own. It almost certainly belonged to a village shaman.

One of the three faces is has an upturned mouth and smiles broadly while to its right is a sad face with a downturned mouth. The third face has a more quizzical slight smile and also possesses a third eye. All three sides of the blade are decorated with entwined snakes.

The phurba is eleven inches in length. The cloth tassels attached to the heads are 17 inches long. It is in excellent condition.
