Nepalese Stone Vishnu
In describing this stone sculpture which has been in our possession for over twenty years we will quote extensively from Pratapaditya Pal's "Art of Nepal". In the first place, Vishnu's wheel and club are in opposite hands from what one usually sees:
"The principal iconographic difference between this Vishnu and the tenth-century example is that here the god holds the flaming wheel with his upper right hand and the club with the corresponding left hand. Indeed the disposition of the attributes in this example is typical of Vishnu images in Nepal since the early Lichchhavi period.” He goes on to say [in describing another Nepalese stone statue] “minor deviations are often the only elements that reflect the artists' limited freedom...(from) the astonishing conservatism of the Nepali tradition.” Thus we as generalists can only guess at the date of this carving, but we doubt it is any later than the seventeenth century. In many ways it closely resembles a stone Avalokitesvara Mr. Pal attributes to the fifteenth century. The tab at the base of the statue which had held it in position has been recently sawn off but otherwise the statue shows no damage from recent times. The top of Vishnu's crown was long ago broken off as was the details of the vehicle on which he stands. The gloss of his face reflects the number of times he has been caressed or blessed with tikka powder. The statue is eight inches tall and six inches across and carved of heavy gray schist. We will be happy to provide additional photos to interested purchasers. We also have a return policy in which we accept all returns so long as the purchaser covers all shipping costs. |
