This item is a copper alloy spear from the Shang Dynasty (ca 1700 BCE-1100 BCE). It is a rare form which also includes a single archaic character inscribed near the socket mouth on one side. The total length of the piece is just over 23 cm. The total weight is 296 grams. There is a slight curvature in the blade which is common on this type of piece. There are small losses to the tip and some damage to the socket edges but the piece is otherwise solid and stable with no signs of repair or restoration. This weapon was part of the famed Arthur M Sackler collection and was purchased through Christie's in New York. The auction tags will remain with the artifact. This is a unique opportunity to own a well-provenanced piece of ancient history.
